In the early 1990's Sas du Toit founded Kwanare, a 5 500 ha farm situated at Stoffberg, near Groblersdal in the Limpopo province. That was the beginning of realising his dream and passion — to successfully breed with rare antelope species. Sas, an entrepreneur and businessman with a focus on the IT industry (a chartered accountant by profession), set himself the task to prove to the experts and cynics alike that an animal with a good genetic build-up will and can survive in the wild - even the highly tick infested area of Stoffberg! With not taking no for an answer he set about to achieve his vision of breeding outstanding, high quality animals which could survive in any natural habitat with minimal human interference.
In the early 2000's, Wicus Coetzer, also a chartered accountant, joined Kwanare. Wicus is well known for his project management skills and being a man for the detail. He loves it when a plan comes together and believes that the more you practise the luckier you get!
Kwanare has four breeding areas, measuring from a 1000 to 2500 ha respectively, where grazing varies from sourveldt to mixveldt (a combination of sour- and sweetveldt grass species). These areas allow us to maximise the use of outstanding male and female genetic material. At Kwanare we believe that female genetics is as important as male genetics. Only the best breeding stock is selected to ensure excellent mothering ability and outstanding trophy quality animals. Sires are used for limited periods of time in each area. Stud principles are applied for keeping record of all rare species.
Kwanare is known for taking bold decisions to secure the right breeding material by for example paying above market prices for animals with better than average genetic make-up. These decisions have enabled Kwanare to breed animals with superior characteristics, some of which have been sold to discerning buyers who also put a premium on quality.
Kwanare has played an influential role in achieving the dreams and aims of Stud Game Breeders.
